Abstract:
- Originally established in 1931 by the Maharaja Umaid Singh a well-illustrated history of the Indian airfield which was to play an important role in aviation history during the 1930s as a staging post for the marathon flights of Bert Hinkler, Rene Lefevre, Lores Bonney and Jean Batten, for the aircraft that were involved in the 1933 first flight over Everest and those competing in the 1934 MacRobertson Air Race and later for major airlines such as Imperial Airways, KLM and Air France. During the Second World War Jodhpur served as the main training base for Indian pilots, the centre for the overhaul of RAF aircraft en route to Burma and for the Allied air supply operations to China over the Himalayas (known as 'The Hump').
